Lightness or darkness of a color is captured by value. Value describes how light or dark something appears, from white (high value) through grays to black (low value). It’s what you adjust when you add white or black to a color to create shading and depth, helping objects read as closer or farther and creating contrast.

Color refers to the hue itself, not its lightness. Form is about the shape and volume of objects, while texture describes the surface feel or pattern. Understanding value lets you build dimension and emphasis in a composition without changing the hue.
